When you are hiking, camping, paddling, snowshoeing, or fishing do you have the right survival gear or kit handy just in case? Some of the items are no-brainers, but some could save your life. I will share with you some of the most common and uncommon items that you should have on your travels.
Knowing your surroundings or having an area map is a great idea. A compass is vital, and if you don’t have one, here are tips for making one yourself: a compass can be made by laying a bobby pin, paperclip, or safety pin, and placing the item on a leaf letting it float in some water. The magnetic part would point to the North. You should have at least 1 GPS device that is waterproof, lightweight, has a long battery life, and is compatible with other smart devices. Cell phones are not the best as you may find yourself in an area with limited or no service.
Another great item is having a fire starter kit is essential for wilderness survival as it provides the means to create fire for warmth, cooking, and signaling in remote outdoor environments. Fire starting tools (or building flames) is an equally important skill and a recommended survival item for the savage land. Pack waterproof matches, a reliable lighter, or a fire starter kit such as tinder or cotton balls soaked in petroleum jelly.
You’ll want to carry a bright flashlight or headlight with you on all of your adventures. Even better to help is a solar powered light due to its long battery life. If you’re lost or disoriented, pull out your whistle to signal for assistance. Carrying medical supplies is handy for your survival kit. Your kit should include a first aid kit with some bandages, antiseptics, small wash cloth, medications, scissors and any other medical supplies you use on a daily basis. Make sure to have the following items, as well: toothbrush, toothpaste, toilet paper, and hand sanitizer.
You will need to have some way to refuel your body after you have calmed down. Energy bars are, without a doubt, the easiest way to fuel up without any prep work. Pack lightweight, high-calorie foods such as protein bars or dried fruit in your daypack. No fuss, no mess. Energy bars, dehydrated camping food, and trail mix are the most convenient food options.
There are many more items that are great to have with you, such as water filtration devices. Staying hydrated is crucial for survival in the wild. We have all heard stories of hikers who believed they carried enough water for a hike and later died from dehydration. Often, it’s because they underestimated the amount of water to carry with them. When you carry a water bottle or a hydration bladder, you’re ensuring a constant and steady supply of water. You will also want to have the supplies for water purification. The easiest way to purify water for drinking is by boiling water being one of the safest and most effective ways to purify water in the wild. Bring the water to a rolling boil for at least one minute to kill any bacteria, viruses, or parasites that may be present. you should carry about 3-4 days’ worth on travels in the wilderness.
In finalizing a small survival bag you can prioritize and use the essentials: navigation tools, shelter, fire-starting equipment for producing fire, a water purification system, a first aid kit, a knife or a survival knife, multi-tool knife, headlamp/flashlight, soap, rain gear or trash bag, communication devices with extra batteries, food and cooking supplies, and hygiene items. Consider updating your survival kit every once in a while, to check for expiration on items (food, batteries). Changing items out as the seasons change can also be done to help the process. Enjoy your great adventures in a safe fun way.
